Reduce Home Heating Bills

You can save a substantial amount of money and reduce your home heating bills. With some common sense and good tips you can reduce your monthly payment.

We all do have some common sense. Do you have rooms in your home that are barely used? If so shut the doors and turn off the heating vents to these rooms. How high is the heat set in your home? Can you wear a sweater and reduce the temperature? More common sense. Do you have a programmable thermostat? They are very efficient when you are sleeping or not at home, and will save dollars on your monthly bill. Every home should have one of these.

Check to see if any cold air is leaking in through the windows in all of your rooms. You actually should be able to feel these drafts and if you have them you need to find these small leaks and seal them. Check with your local home improvement store for the materials and advice on sealing these leaky windows. Homeowners often miss this and the result is higher monthly heating bills.

Is your house properly insulated? Think of insulation as a down comforter, it keeps heat inside the home where it belongs instead of escaping the house. Problems with leaky and poor (or missing) insulation will definitely rise up your heating bill in the winter time.

Your energy provider likely has tips and ideas to help you conserve energy and heat. They often supply this information with your monthly bills, so check there. Some energy companies will provide a free energy audit, which will highlight the areas in your home you need to address, to save money on your heating bills. If they do not they can likely recommend a company that does supply energy audits.
