- no heat from gas furnace

No heat is coming from your furnace and it’s cold in your house. No worries, we will have you up and running hopefully in no time.  If you are looking to do the trouble shooting yourself and potentially even fix the issue, we have a helpful check list. Trouble shooting the heating issue can definitely save you money and increase your knowledge of the gas furnace.

  1. Step number one, be sure and check that the thermostat for your heater is set to trigger the furnace to come on. If the thermostat is not set higher than the current room temperature the furnace will not turn on.
  2. Step number two, the pilot light may be out or the gas valve could have been shut off. Make sure the gas valve is in the open position. If the pilot light is not lit, see our guide for lighting a gas pilot furnace.
  3. Step number three, check that the furnace power switch is turned on; it will be located next to or inside the furnace cabinet. If it’s off, turn it on and wait a few minutes for the furnace to start.
  4. Step number four, have you checked to see if your circuit breaker was tripped (turned to the off position). If the breaker to the furnace is set to the “off” position reset it to “on”.   If the circuit blows again you may have a short in the electrical system that provides power to the furnace. Call a contractor if the circuit breaker continues to trip, this is not something we recommend an amateur attempt to fix. If  a fuse is blown, replace the fuse.
  5. Step number 5, check if the furnace motor overloaded. Find a “reset” button near the furnace housing and press it. If nothing happens, wait 30 minutes for the motor to cool, and then try pressing the “reset” button one more time.
  6. Step number 6, pat yourself on the back for getting this far. The issue may be a problem with the thermostat. Check out our guide for trouble shooting a faulty thermostat.

If the steps above did not help you solve the heating repair issue, call your local heating contractor and let them know the herculean trouble shooting effort you went through.
